Sitting comfortably?

Office workers should aim to be on their feet for at least two €“ but preferably four €“ hours a day, to counteract the ill effects of a sedentary lifestyle, experts have recommended in new guidance. The guidance, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and commissioned by Public Health England, recommends breaking up periods of prolonged sitting with light walking, standing based work and the use of sit-stand desks.

The authors point out that on average people in the UK spend 60 per cent of their waking hours engaged in sedentary activities, rising to 70 per cent for people at risk of long-term conditions. They argue that encouraging people to move about more during their working day may be more achievable than targeted exercise.
