Two prescription only vitamin D products have been approved for the treatment of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant and breastfeeding women €“ the first preparations containing vitamin D3 to be licensed for use in these groups. Over-the-counter products containing vitamin D3 are available. However, these are not recommended by the MHRA for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to potential inaccuracies and variations in the dosages. Fultium-D3 800 IU and 3,200 IU capsules have met the criteria of the MHRA and ensure a reliable and consistent dose.
Dr Pam Brown, a GP from Swansea, commented: €Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to take vitamin D to support them throughout pregnancy and while breastfeeding. The 800 IU and 3,200 IU licence updates are great news for prescribers like myself because it is essential that I can offer these patients a licensed treatment that offers quality and a regulated dose.€
