NICE update for dementia

People with dementia should be involved in discussions about their care, says the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in its latest guideline update for the condition.

The new guideline highlights the need to properly train healthcare staff and says that carers should be helped to improve support for people living with dementia. The recommendations focus on person-centred care, placing a particular emphasis on involving people with dementia in every decision about the care they receive.

Professor Gillian Leng, deputy chief executive, NICE, said: “There are over 850,000 people in the UK with dementia, and this figure is expected to double in the next 30 years. It is therefore more important than ever that we work together to be able to support those that are affected as well as their families and carers.”
