module menu icon The sleep cycle

Sleep has five stages – stages 1-4 and REM sleep – and a complete cycle takes between 90 and 110 minutes. Adults spend almost half of their time asleep in stage 2. Deep sleep provides the most restorative sleep. The first REM (rapid eye movement) period occurs about 70 to 90 minutes after falling asleep and is relatively short. As the sleep progresses, REM periods increase in length and deep sleep decreases.
