In nominating dispensing assistant Alex for the RoE Awards, Melanie Carlton store manager of Boots UK in Chingford said: “One of Alex’s best skills is her ability to show compassion and get to know the real need of patients” 

This was certainly demonstrated during the Covid-19 pandemic when Alex received a phonecall from a worried patient. Confusion over how to take a prescription that had been delivered rang warning bells and so Alex visited the patient at home to rectify the situation. Upon arriving, she also discovered that the patient had not been given her medication from the dosette boxes by her carers and so reported this to the pharmacist and GP, raising it as a safeguarding issue.

The judges highlighted this important intervention and praising Alex’s proactivity, adaptability and prioritisation skills. Pharmacy Magazine editor Richard Thomas says: “Alex impressed with her care and compassion throughout the Covid crisis and truly went ‘above and beyond’ on behalf of her patients and customers.”

Alex went on to be rewarded with highly commended for the Covid-19 Hero Award.
