Tips for breastfeeding

  • Feed baby directly from the breast. This closeness helps to form a bond and a mutual understanding of signals between mum and baby.
  • Try to find a comfortable and regular environment for feeding and avoid distractions. A cushion on the lap might help to support baby and bring them closer to mum's breast.
  • When baby starts to show signs of hunger, mum should offer a feed. Make eye contact with each other and mum should talk gently in an encouraging way.
  • When baby's nose is in line with mum's nipple, their mouth should be wide open, enough to cover the nipple and lower part of the dark areola around it.
  • If baby opens their mouth, she should place her nipple into their mouth and allow them to draw it further in. Mum should take her time to feed, stopping frequently to wind them. Look out for fullness cues.
  • The more baby drinks, the more milk mum's breasts produce. If mum thinks her baby still wants more milk and her breast feels empty, she could offer the other breast.
