Bone health

Bones are like any part of the body; they are dynamic, living tissues. They constantly break down and remodel themselves. In fact, you end up with a completely new skeleton about every 10 years.1 Bone mass increases until our early twenties, when peak bone mass is achieved. From the age of about 40 years, bone loss exceeds bone formation and bone mass gradually decreases.2

As well as minerals, bone is comprised of protein, and contains connective tissues, a network of nerves and blood vessels, and of course the marrow at the centre. Therefore, good nutrition doesn't just support bone mineralisation - it helps the whole skeletal complex stay healthy too.3

Several vitamins and minerals play a role in maintaining healthy bones, such as calcium, vitamin D and vitamin K. As appetite may drop as people get older, eating less can make it more difficult to get the nutrients they need to keep muscles and bones strong and healthy. Customers should still aim to have a healthy, balanced diet. If their diet is not as good as it should be, they should consider taking a dietary supplement.4
