Supporting customers
When helping customers to stop or cut down smoking there are several ways that you can give them support. Preparation is key for customers. There are a number of questions you can ask so you can gather information to then discuss next steps - click the symbols below to find out more.
What are your initial feelings about stopping smoking?
What do you think are the benefits of being a non-smoker?
What situations trigger cravings, and can these be avoided?
What support do you have?
Have you tried to stop before - if so, what can you do differently this time?

Talking through their reasons for stopping will help customers prepare for the challenges ahead, and can be used in follow up conversations to help keep them motivated and recognise their achievement. Ask them what they want to achieve - to completely stop or cut down - and by when. Suggest they set a quit date.
Using NRT or other stop-smoking medicines can double your customer's chances of quitting successfully compared to willpower alone as untreated cravings can cause lapses.6
