Debunking the myths

There are lots of myths surrounding head lice and their treatment. As a member of the pharmacy team, you play a key role in ensuring that customers are reassured and given the correct information.

MYTH 4

Head lice treatments have to be left on for hours

TRUTH: There are lots of fast-acting treatments available now, including shampoos, lotions and sprays that work in as little as 15 minutes, when used in line with pack instructions.

MYTH 5

The most effective treatments are only available from behind the pharmacy counter

TRUTH: Treatments containing dimeticone, osmolone or oxyphthirine are clinically proven to be effective against head lice and eggs.4,5 These do not have to be kept behind the pharmacy counter but can be sited front of shop for customers to self-select.

MYTH 6

Head lice treatments are too harsh for young children or people with sensitive skin

TRUTH: Some products have been dermatologically tested to ensure they are kind to the skin and hair and are suitable for people with sensitive skin.

For children aged 6 months to 2 years, as well as people with eczema, NICE guidelines recommend dimeticone or wet combing as first line treatment.3
