Heartburn (acid reflux) is when the contents of the stomach move up into the throat and cause a burning sensation in the chest or sour taste in the mouth.1 Indigestion (dyspepsia) is a term that can be used to describe the general abdominal discomfort, such as feeling full or sick, experienced after eating.2

As well as recommending the appropriate product, advice such as the following may help customers get some symptom relief.1,2

  • Avoid trigger foods and drinks (e.g. fatty foods, coffee, alcohol)
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Eat smaller meals
  • Try to relax
  • Prop up the head and shoulders at night

Although indigestion and heartburn are common, there are customers that should be referred to a GP for further investigation:1-3

  1. Customers who are over 55 years of age with unexplained or persistent dyspepsia; who have a risk factor for stomach cancer; or those that have tried lifestyle changes or medicines which are not helping
  2. Customers with any of the following symptoms:
  • Persistent indigestion/heartburn
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • A lump in the stomach
  • Blood in the vomit/faeces
  • Feeling like food is getting stuck in their throat
