Thirst for knowledge

Christine Park, awarded highly commended in the Counter Intelligence category, impressed the judges with her enthusiasm for assisting customers, as well as the clear pride she takes in her work at Lloydspharmacy in Dingwall in the Highlands of Scotland

Christine has used her skills and knowledge to spot the signs of serious medical conditions and support customers to take control of their health. On one occasion, after carrying out routine blood pressure checks on an elderly couple, she appropriately referred the gentleman to the pharmacist, and when he returned to the pharmacy with a prescription for an antihypertensive, she recommended that he purchase an at-home blood pressure monitor.

Leyla Hannbeck, head of pharmacy at the NPA, commented: “Christine gave a good example of how she helped highlight a patient who may be suffering with hypertension, signposted him appropriately, and also reassured the patient and his wife.”

Christine says that being able to help people in this way is her favourite part of the job, particularly elderly customers who may find their medication confusing or who don’t otherwise have much social interaction. She also recognises the importance of continuous training in order to adapt to the constant changes within pharmacy, as well as ensuring she always provides the best service possible.

“We need to adapt and it’s important that we are confident in passing on information,” she says. “I also like to further my own knowledge and be confident in what I know and am passing on.”
