CPD activity

Before you start reading this article, think about:

  • What do I want to learn?
  • What will I gain from this learning?
  • What will my employer gain?
  • What difference will it make to people who use my services?

People with a learning disability are more likely to suffer from a range of physical health conditions than their non-disabled peers; differences in health status that are, to some extent, avoidable. Pharmacy professionals have a role in promoting good health and reducing these health inequalities.

The Mencap report – Death by indifference – highlighted potential reasons for these health inequalities, including social deprivation and biological factors. However, it is important to understand that many people with a learning disability may not be able to communicate their particular difficulties, and hence their health needs may go unrecognised and untreated.

Physical health conditions more commonly encountered by people with a learning disability include obesity, heart disease, respiratory disease, gastrointestinal disease, hypothyroidism, problems with menstruation, hearing problems, oral health problems, skin problems and dementia.

Practice point

  • Think about the physical health conditions listed above. What lifestyle education and support could you offer to people with a learning disability to improve their quality of life?
