  • Drink plenty of fluids €“ around 1.5-2 litres a day (unless the customer is on a fluid restricted diet). Cutting down on fluids does not reduce the likelihood of urine leaks, and will only increase the risk of bladder infections and constipation which, in turn, can exacerbate bladder weakness
  • Drink the right fluids €“ opt for water and squash in preference to caffeine, alcohol or fizzy drinks
  • Don't go to the toilet 'just in case' €“ this encourages the bladder to be 'irritable' or sensitive. It's best to learn to hold on until the bladder is full
  • Opt for low impact exercises such as Pilates and yoga, rather than high impact sports, which may make symptoms worse
  • Get someone else to do heavy lifting and generally avoid strenuous exertion
  • Weight loss in those who are overweight can help to relieve pressure on the pelvic floor muscles
  • Pelvic floor exercises can really make a difference €“ however, they are not a quick fix and customers need to be prepared to keep practising these exercises for three to six months to see an improvement.

Low impact exercise such as Pilates and yoga should be recommended
