Chilblains
It is thought that chilblains are caused by an abnormal reaction to cold temperatures, probably as a result of poor circulation. They sometimes occur when a person warms their skin up too quickly €“ perhaps by putting their feet on a hot water bottle or too close to a fire or radiator.
What are the symptoms? A sufferer may get just one chilblain €“ a small, painful, red, itchy swelling on the skin of the toes €“ or several occurring together to form a larger swollen area. Chilblains can feel like they are burning, and blistering can sometimes occur.
What are the treatment options? If the affected area is kept warm and away from direct heat, chilblains usually heal up by themselves. However, soothing creams and ointments may help to provide relief from symptoms. Example: Nelsons Chilblains Cream.
Cracked heels and dry skin
Feet are one of the most likely parts of the body to have dry skin. Some people suffer from it more than others, but it also worsens with age, when the body begins to lose its natural elasticity and moisture.
If the skin on the heels is particularly dry, it becomes thickened, hard and less flexible. When walking, pressure is put onto the heel, which the skin copes with by stretching and spreading out. If the skin is too inflexible to stretch, it will crack.
What are the symptoms? Symptoms may include dry, scaly areas on the skin and vertical cracks or splits in the heel. In severe cases, the cracks may bleed and can become inflamed or infected.
What are the treatment options? Remove the affected skin using a foot file, pumice stone or specialist foot exfoliating product. Example: MICRO Pedi.
Rehydrate the skin using a specialist foot cream or balm. Example: Scholl Hard Skin Softening Cream.
Bunions
A bunion is a bone deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. The big toe will point inwards, which forces the bone attached to it to stick out. The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought to be linked to family history, and wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the condition.
Painkillers, shoe insoles, bunion pads and correctly-fitting shoes can help to minimise pain.
