Gases released from the film of bacteria on the teeth and gums (plaque) are usually the cause of bad breath (halitosis). Smoking is another common cause. Certain stomach conditions and strong smelling foods can occasionally cause bad breath too. Bad breath can also occur with dry mouth, a condition where the flow of saliva through the mouth is reduced. Dry mouth is a side effect of certain medicines and is also more common in old age.

What are the symptoms?

If a person suspects that they might have bad breath, they can lick the inside of their wrist and then sniff it €“ if the smell is unpleasant, then it is probable that they have bad breath. Dry mouth causes discomfort and problems swallowing.

What are the treatment options?

Good oral hygiene is essential to prevent bad breath. If bad breath is caused by dry mouth then a gel or spray that mimics saliva can help. Example: Biotène. Mouthwashes are also available to help ease symptoms. Example: Biotène Moisturising Mouthwash.
