It is important to brush a child's teeth twice a day, using a smear of toothpaste on a softbristled brush, as soon as their first teeth start to arrive.

According to the Department of Health, under-threes should use a lower fluoride toothpaste.

If a child is reluctant to have their teeth brushed, suggest that mum or dad brushes their teeth at the same time, and tries to make it fun.

If the child can, they should spit out any excess toothpaste, as rinsing the mouth out afterwards will reduce the benefit of fluoride.

You can also suggest that parents avoid giving their children too many sweets and sugary drinks.

If the child drinks from a bottle or feeder cup between meals, explain that it is best to give milk or just water €“ fruit juices and other drinks are best kept for meal times.
