Antispasmodics

An example of this type of treatment available OTC is hyoscine butylbromide. This active ingredient targets the underlying problem of nonspecific abdominal cramps by relaxing the smooth muscle in the walls of the GI tract. This helps to stop the spasms that lead to the painful stomach cramps. Example: Buscopan Cramps.

Mebeverine and alverine can also be used in the treatment of IBS where stomach cramps are the main symptom troubling the customer. Examples: Colofac, Buscopan IBS Relief.

Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil has an antispasmodic effect that can help to relieve painful stomach cramping in IBS. It is available OTC in slow-release, entericcoated capsules that are designed to be swallowed whole. Example: Colpermin IBS.

Antiflatulents

Customers whose pain is caused by trapped wind or bloating may find symptom relief with an antiflatulent medication such as simeticone or activated dimeticone. These ingredients help to release trapped wind in the stomach by combining small air bubbles to make larger ones, which the body can get rid of more easily. Examples: Remegel Wind Relief, Rennie Deflatine.
