Cooling therapy

Menthol causes a cold sensation when applied to the skin. It does this by making the blood vessels on the surface of the skin widen so that there is a loss of heat. This helps to reduce the amount of pain that is felt and is best used in the first 48-72 hours after an injury. Example: Deep Freeze Cold Spray.

Ice or cooling therapy should be applied within the first 48-72 hours of an injury

TENS therapy

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) machine is a small, portable device that is worn on the body to emit small electrical pulses that block pain signals. TENS is most commonly used to reduce pain caused by problems in the muscles, joints and nerves, as well as during the early stages of labour. Although its effectiveness varies between individuals, it produces hardly any side effects.

PEMF technology

This produces a steady stream of pulsed electro-magnetic field (PEMF) waves to speed up recovery from soft tissue injuries, such as tendonitis, sprains and strains, repetitive strain injury (RSI), carpal tunnel syndrome, swelling around painful arthritic joints and aching muscles.

The invisible, pain-free PEMF waves have two effects on the body's natural healing mechanism: blood capillaries enlarge, bringing more blood to the area being treated, and the metabolic rate of the body's cells speeds up, reducing the time it takes for damaged tissues to heal.

Reflection points

1. Think of the words you would use to explain to a customer how hot or cold therapy will help to relieve their painful muscles.

2. Look at the topical pain relief options and formats you stock for each of the following:

            €¢ NSAID gel
            €¢ Rubefacient cream
            €¢ Cooling therapy spray.
