There are lots of different types of vitamins, but they can be divided into two groups:
Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) €“ these are mainly found in fatty foods such as butter, cheese, vegetable oil and oily fish. The body stores these vitamins in the liver and fatty tissues until they are needed. Having too much of these vitamins can be harmful
Water soluble vitamins (e.g. C, B complex and folic acid) €“ these are found in a variety of different foods, such as fruit, vegetables, grains and pulses. The body does not store these vitamins. Any excess amounts are taken away from the body in urine.
