Home working hindrance

Some 64 per cent of 18-29-year-olds have experienced back problems in the past year as a result of longer working hours coupled with poor home working posture.

Some 64 per cent of 18-29-year-olds have experienced back problems in the past year as a result of longer working hours coupled with poor home working posture, according to a new national survey and report commissioned as part of Mentholatum’s Mind Your Back campaign.

Of the people who had experienced new back pain over the past year, more than half (56 per cent) said they had lower back pain, while 23 per cent had pain in the neck or shoulder blades. Lower back and neck pain are common complaints when screens are not at eye level, or chairs fail to support the back, allowing desk workers to slump, Mentholatum explains.

The company highlights the Mind Your Back ‘5 S.T.E.P.S.’ programme (stretch, therapy, exercise, posture, strengthen) to keep the back mobile, flexible and active. The therapy step can involve hot, cold therapies or anti-inflammatory topical therapies, such as Deep Heat, Deep Freeze and Deep Relief, which help kick-start the healing process, Mentholatum adds.
