PHE launches Every Mind Matters

A new mental health campaign entitled Every Mind Matters, has been launched by Public Health England (PHE) in partnership with the NHS

Launched on 7 October 2019, the campaign's main aim is to support people to feel more confident in taking action to look after their mental health and wellbeing by promoting self care.

More than eight in 10 people (83 per cent) have experienced early signs of poor mental health including feeling anxious, stressed, having low mood or trouble sleeping in the last 12 months, according to a new PHE survey.

Simple steps

Every Mind Matters demonstrates the simple steps that people can build into their daily lives – such as reframing unhelpful thoughts, breathing exercises and increasing physical activity – to look after their mental health, improve their mental wellbeing and support others.

The new platform, which has been endorsed by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RGCP), enables users to create a personalised action plan recommending a set of self care actions to deal with stress, boost mood, improve sleep and feel in control.

“Our health – both mental and physical – is an asset that needs to be nurtured. We’re all aware of the benefits of looking after our physical health and the steps we can take to keep ourselves healthy, but many of us are not as knowledgeable or proactive as we could be when it comes to our mental health,” commented health secretary Matt Hancock when the campaign launched. “Every Mind Matters will benefit us all with an accessible tool to help manage our wellbeing at the click of a button. It will offer vital support to those living with a mental health condition and give each of us valuable and personalised tips on how to better cope with life’s daily struggles, while contributing to tackling the stigma that can still surround mental health.”

Royal approval

A film to promote Every Mind Matters, written by Richard Curtis, directed by Rankin and narrated by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, was aired at 8:45pm on 7 October 2019 across ITV, Channel 4 and various Sky channels. The film features a range of well-known people whose lives have been affected by poor mental health, including singer Will Young, cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins and presenter Katie Piper.

The campaign is supported by several mental health charities including Mind, Mental Health Foundation and Samaritans. The NHS has also committed to promote Every Mind Matters to its one-million plus workforce.

How to get involved

PHE recommends watching its campaign webinar and downloading the supporting resources so that pharmacy teams can understand and deliver the campaign effectively to their customers. A suite of digital resources are available to download online including digital banners, social media assets, and a campaign toolkit can also be ordered. Teams can also guide customers to the Every Mind Matters website to discover simple steps for a healthier mind and create bespoke action plans.
